The central-northern Spanish city of Bilbao is the capital of Vizcaya and is located just 14 km south of the Bay of Biscay. Bilbao’s most notable museum is the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. The museum in operation from 10:00 to 20:00, and is open Monday through Sunday in the summers (July and August) and Tuesday through Sunday the remainder of the year. The Mercade de la Ribera is one of the largest covered markets in all of Europe and features fish and meat sales from Monday through Saturday. Bilbao is home to the Teatro Arriaga [Tel: 94 435 5100], which dates back to the 1890’s, though it burned down in 1914 and was resurrected in 1919. The exterior of the opera house is very ornate and detailed and the interior is worth a visit, as well. Located inside the Teatro Arriaga is a tourist information office.

This airport features flights from many carriers including Lufthansa, Easy Jet, Spanair, and other widely-known airlines. A bus ticket from Bilbao airport to the city is less than €2, while taxis run between €25 and €30. However, it is a good idea to rent a car when in Bilbao because there are wonderful sights just outside the city for tourists to visit, as well.
